What use is a Cambridge Certificate?

The Cambridge Certificates are among the world's best known general qualifications in English as a foreign language. They are widely recognised in commerce & industry and by state authorities. Many foreign universities encourage their students to take the Cambridge Certificate examinations.

Most English-speaking institutions of higher education accept the Certificate of Proficiency and the Advanced Certificate as proof that a foreign students has an adequate command of English to follow a course of study in English.

Who can take the Cambridge examinations?

Anyone with the right level of English. If you are uncertain about your level of English, we can send you a Preliminary Grading Test to complete at home and return to us for marking.

Cambridge Certificate Courses at B.E.L.S.

Our courses cover the syllabuses in a lively, thorough and efficient way and enable you to achieve good examination result in the shortest time possible.

The syllabus of our International Five-week Proficiency Course is similar in style and content to the first five weeks of our CA and CP courses. The second five weeks cover further advanced English and exam practice.

Who are these courses for?

Basically anyone interested in reaching the target levels in General English tested by the exams.

Most of the students attending the CP and CA Courses at B.E.L.S. are students of English Philology, and trainee teachers & translators who wish to achieve greater confidence and fluency in English. The courses are naturally open to students and academics of all faculties and others with the same goal.

A note to school leavers

A Cambridge Certificate Course provides an excellent opportunity for school leavers who wish to improve their mastery of English before starting their studies or vocational training. A good command of English is fundamental in many academic fields, and for careers in the civil service, business, and industry.

Levels required for top marks in the examinations

CA - lower-advanced / good practical command of English for professional and private purposes
CP - upper-advanced / very good practical & academic command of English with a high degree of fluency

What are the minimum starting levels for the courses?

CA - upper-intermediate
CP - lower-advanced

What do the Cambridge Certificate examinations test?

Each examination tests the four main language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - and assesses the ability to use a variety of structures and functions in real-life situations. The Proficiency Examination also tests your ability to handle ideas and express yourself in more intellectual contexts.

Exam results at B.E.L.S.

Our past students have achieved a success rate of around 90% in the Cambridge Certificate exams.

Exam entry

The examinations can only be taken in June and December. Details of examination fees, which are not included in the school fees, can be obtained from the School Office. Any combination of Certificate Examinations may be entered for in the same session. You may, for example, enter for both the Advanced & Proficiency exams at the same time.

Students not resident in Britain who attend the summer examination course (August - October) must arrange to take the December examination in their country of residence, preferably before they come to England. A list of examination centres for external candidates can be obtained from:

Students on the Cambridge Courses are required to buy the prescribed textbooks for the course. Course books in perfect condition can be resold to the school at their secondhand value.

Tuition Fees: (10 weeks with 20 academic hours per week) EUR 2400
An administration charge of EUR 75 is payable to the school in addition to the tuition fees.
